Each year, The Speech & Hearing Board strives to expand its service base to the children and adults living in Pensacola and throughout Northwest Florida who have speech and hearing difficulties. With the help of United Way funding, local Sertoma clubs, small grants and private gifts, The Speech & Hearing Board is here to provide financial assistance to those in need of speech and hearing evaluation, and therapy to those who may not be able to afford such services. Currently, The Speech & Hearing Board is one of the few programs in Northwest Florida to provide financial aid for treatment and public education.
Children who cannot speak or hear correctly often face challenges, both developmentally and socially. When intervention is provided prior to school enrollment, both peer interaction and education progress are enhanced. The first step in treating the problem is finding the problem. The Speech & Hearing Board funds screenings for speech, language and hearing throughout the year at community events, such as Expos and area daycare centers.
Therapy for adults includes various situations involving communication and swallowing impairments as a result of stroke, head injury and cancer. The goal of speech-language therapy is to achieve functional communication that enhances the quality of life, and if possible, to reinstate employment.
